2 Guns

I know what you’re thinking. 2 Guns will be an early favorite for some Oscar love next year. I mean, this film has it all. Great story, strong acting performances, big explosions. Okay, well maybe just one out of those three. I’ll let you guess which one.

I don’t think its any secret that films like 2 Guns have a ceiling on their potential. Somewhat to my surprise, 2 Guns even had a hard time reaching the lower ceiling. Its not even like this film was all that horrible, its just that it wasn’t all that great either. Everything about this film felt recycled to me. Every plot twist was predictable. Honestly, there really wasn’t anything memorable about this movie at all.

As a whole I was not impressed, but 2 Guns did have a couple of decent moments. Something that was pretty surprising to me was how funny it actually was. I did feel there were a couple points where Stig (Mark Wahlberg), in particular, was trying too hard. But, overall, it was much funnier than I expected it to be. The most laughs definitely come from the things that come out of Stig’s mouth. With the exception of those few moments where he’s trying too hard, I think Wahlberg did a pretty decent job.

Unfortunately, I can’t really say the same for Bobby (Denzel Washington). This is really a shame, because I thought if anyone would try to save this film, it’d be Washington. I can’t say that I’ve seen every film that he has done, but this was one of my least favorite performances from him. It almost felt to me like Washington was on cruise control through the whole movie. It’s like he knew it would be a dud, so he didn’t put any effort in whatsoever.

Before wrapping up this review, I have to give special mention to one particular scene that was just too outrageous to not point out. There is a scene where Bobby goes into the kitchen of a building and cuts the gas lines. He lets the gas leak out for approximately 5 seconds and then throws a lighter into the room. This proceeds to blow up the entire building, while Bobby hangs out in the walk-in freezer until its over. Apparently, the people that owned this building also kept 100 lbs. of dynamite in all of the other rooms. The whole thing was so ridiculous, I couldn’t help but LOL.

Anyway, I think that it goes without saying that you should skip this one. There is no reason at all that you should be wasting your money on a movie like 2 Guns. The best part is Stig’s humor, but if you really want to go see Wahlberg be funny, rent Ted.

Score: 5/10
