The trailers for this one didn’t reel me in. I had my doubts that Zoe Saldana would be able to make this role interesting enough to sit through. Not only did Saldana make the role interesting, she single-handedly powered the film from start to finish.
Beware of Cataleya
As I mentioned, I basically went into this film with my mind made up. I told myself that I was going to hate it. Even though I already had this opinion, there was one thing that really intrigued me: Could Saldana tear it up as much as the trailers showed? The answer to this question is yes. In fact, Saldana’s ass-kicking made this movie what it was. The only complaint I have here is the PG-13 rating. This really limits the potential of the film. Sony does as much as they possibly can under the PG-13 cap, but it could have been so much more.
One of the things I really enjoyed with this movie was that nothing seemed too dragged out. The script followed the same basic plan: picking the target, doing something cool to get to the target, killing the target, repeat. Every action of the film had a reason, and ultimately lead to something. There are a lot of flicks today that can’t say they’re able to do the same.
The Bottom Line
Go catch this one. I was pretty closed minded heading into it, but it quickly changed my mind. Saldana plays an excellent Cataleya. She is on point with both the emotions and violence. She is truly a woman on a mission, and won’t stop until she gets there. Most importantly, never forget where you came from!
